It hasn’t been that long since manicurists catered to the wealthy and worked mostly in remote hair salons. While people like Cher were getting her nails done, the rest of us weren’t. However today there are, stand alone nail salons along every strip mall and commercial block of cities from South Carolina to Southern California. Nails magazine pegged the market at $6 billion in 1996 for salon services alone, up from $5.2 billion a year earlier. About 239,000 manicurists work as nail technicians, complete with license no less. For comparisons sake, the Business Software Alliance counted only about three times that many people were employed in the software industry. Read more…
